Tranquility in the Volta River Estuary – ADA FOAH

ADA FOAH, GHANA

After a 2-hour drive east from Accra, we arrived on the southeast coast of Ghana in the town of Ada Foah; where the Volta River embraces the Atlantic Ocean. If you’re following me on Instagram, I’ve mentioned a number of times that the main purpose of this trip was to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 50th birthday. With this in mind and intent on giving her a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city, one of her close friends gifted her with a day’s accommodation for three on a private island in the region called Treasure Island.

You won’t find much information on the property yet because it is currently undergoing renovations in hopes to transition into a more commercialized destination. Lucky for us, we had the entire island to ourselves.

The primary mode of transportation across the region is by boat. We watched as the fishermen arose before the crack of dawn to prep their canoes for a days work and as locals paddled by modestly on their way to school and/or work. One of the local dialects in the Volta region is Ewe, so listening to my husband, mother/sister-in-law interacting with some of the locals was poetic.

Tranquility

There was nothing remarkable about the island itself (Actually, I lied …the food/fish was BOMB.COM!), yet, I’ve been so moved by this experience. We spent time unwinding by the pool, enjoying the exquisite fish dishes from the kitchen and sipping on champagne through the evening.  With our hearts and bellies filled, we laughed, played, sang and reminisced as we enjoyed the pristine sunrises and the tranquil sunsets.

Although we had no initial plans of coming to Ada when we set off to Ghana, this small but remarkable village has etched a place for itself in every fibre of my being. The memories of the village will linger on in my heart, my lips and my eyes for decades to come.
